History of cataract surgery is very fascinating and our present generation of young ophthalmologists who are and have seen various subspecialities and recent advances in every branch of medicine might be surprised as what was done long back in the era when we had no anaesthesia no surgeons no medical care so what was done let me answer from ophthalmic point we had one can call them psuedosurgeons or quakes they would operate cataract by a modality called couching and they were called couchers.
