Abstract

The tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) has a rich history that dates back more than a century, to Beijerinck's description of tobacco mosaic disease as a contagium vivum fluidum and the contemporary use of the term "virus." TMV has now been recognised as a preferred didactic model and a symbolic model to shed light on the key characteristics that characterise a virus.

TMV also became a prototype model for studying the biology of tobacco, the host plant. TMV also serves as an example of how a model system advances new, frequently surprising advances in virology and biology. TMV is now employed as a technique to produce useful medicinal proteins in tobacco as well as a tool to investigate host-pathogen relationships and cellular transport. The history of TMV demonstrates how practical approaches to managing a tobacco disease that is commercially significant have had surprising and transformative implications on a variety of platforms that affect the health of plants and the general population.
