Abstract

The study on ampelographic characteristics of different grape germplasms grafted on Dogridge rootstock at National Active Germplasm Site, National Research Centre for Grapes, Pune was carried out during 2023-24. The research assessed 50 grape germplasms based on morphological characteristics. High variations were noted in vine features, leaf morphology, bunch density, and berry characteristics. Light brown under bark was prevalent, and most of the germplasm possessed medium bud break duration ranging from 9-14 days. Leaf characteristics exhibited variation in size, shape, lobes, and hair density, with five-lobed pentagonal leaves being the most common. Flowering times differed significantly in majority of germplasms (38-45 DAP). Bunch density was generally medium, while conical bunch forms were common. Round and short elliptical berries were widespread, with black and green-yellow skin being most common. Most of the accessions had light green flesh and neutral taste, with a combination of seeded and seedless types. Mature leaf: erect hairs between veins on lower side of blade had the highest CV (123.07%) followed by berry: anthocyanin coloration of mesocarp (118.76 % CV). The variability available indicated the genetic diversity present in the grape germplasm essential for breeding and conservation efforts. Overall study demonstrated the effectiveness of morphological characterization in assessing genetic diversity and identifying distinct grapevine genotypes.
