Abstract

Liniments are liquid for cutaneous application that are intended to be applied to the unbroken skin with friction. They are alcoholic or oil base based solutions or emulsions containing topically active therapeutic agent. Alcoholic liniments are used generally for their counter-irritant, mildly astringent, rubefacient, and penetrating effects. The oily liniments are milder in there action as they penetrate lesser, but are more useful when massage is required. Liquid balm is a liniments, used as a pain relief.
