Eales disease

William Henry wale in the year 1817 an Australian ophthalmologist to describe this condition characterized by recurrent.

Vitreous hemorrhage occurring in an young healthy individuals.

A kind of disease exclusively occurring in young Asian people.

Clinical presentation
  • Retinal vasculitis
  • Occlusion
  • Neovascularization

The condition dies not only involve retinal veins but retinal vessels also.

The condition is also known as perivasculitis retinea which is primary and secondary primary is Eales disease.

Secondary could be pars planitis and chorioretinitis.

Exact cause of Eales disease is not known however various risk factors are:

  • Retinal vessels may be sensitized to the toxins of acid fast bacilli.
  • Excretion of 17 keto ketosteroids may be reduced.
  • Focal sepsis.
  • Hematopoietic disturbances.
  • Parasitic infestations.
  • Peripheral vascular diseases kind of thromboangiitis obliterans.
  • Central Eales kind of C R. V occlusion.
DX can be made
  • Direct ophthalmoscopy
  • Indirect ophthalmoscopy
  • Fundus fluorescence angiography
  • OCT.
Kind of neovascularization is of various types:
  • Sea fan
  • Sunburst
  • DD
  • Behcet's disease
  • Sickle cell disease.
Complications
  • Neovascular glaucoma
  • Retinal detachment.
Treatment
  • Steroids: Oral, peribulbar
  • Paras p. vitrectomy
  • Laser
  • Anti veg.
