Abstract

Larynx is a complex anatomical structure which is essential for breathing, phonation and swallowing. Injury to larynx is rare because of its location, may produce only subtle symptoms/signs. If its diagnosis and treatment get delayed it may become a source of significant morbidity and potentially be fatal. The highest critical juncture met while managing laryngeal trauma is while trying to put the larynx back to as near to its pre-trauma anatomy and functions. With early intervention (within 24-48hrs) better patient outcomes are seen. Here we intend to present a case of female who was in her fifth decade of life, sustained a complete midline laryngeal cartilage fracture involving complete severance and displacement of both laminae following blunt trauma to neck due to an accidental fall. She was taken up for an emergency tracheostomy and her laryngeal injury was treated with ‘titanium mesh fixation’. This case report deserves to be registered to highlight that early recognition of the injury, its accurate evaluation, prompt intervention with good surgical expertise and an undaunting will to seek multi-specialty guidance, are all key factors that are extremely important to ensure a successful management which should essentially translate in restoration of a near normal laryngeal function with good quality of life for the patient.
