The Ethics in Clinical Scientific Research: A Global Challenge in Public Health Dynamics in Low Resource Limited Countries

The goal of clinical research is to develop generalizable knowledge that improves human health or enhances an understanding the human system. Volunteers who participate in clinical research facilitate the pooling of data that make it possible to secure an understanding of human biology/functioning. The odyssey a new drug or treatment for safety and efficacy, good quality is through clinical testing on patient volunteers. However, creating cohort with some volunteers on placebo with more risk of harm for the good of others is a big challenge demonstrates that clinical research has the potential to exploit patient volunteers. The ethical guidelines in place today were primarily a response to past abuses, the most notorious of which in America was an experiment in Tuskegee, Alabama, in which treatment was withheld from 400 African American men with syphilis so that scientists could study the course of the disease. Various ethical guidelines were developed in the 20th century in response to such studies. The purpose of this review is to exploit the ethical guidelines developed to protect patient volunteers and to preserve the integrity of the science in clinical research.
