Abstract

Background and Aims: Health care providers (HCPs) play an essential role in recommending and implementing appropriate CRC screening measures. In view of the rising CRC burden as well as its late detection in Lebanon and the surrounding region, this study explores HCPs knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes regarding CRC screening.

Methods: 167 HCPs (56.9% nurses and 43.1% physicians) from various departments of Saint Georges Hospital University Medical Center (SGHUMC), one of the leading tertiary care centers in Lebanon, participated in this cross-sectional survey. Data related to HCPs’ knowledge and attitudes regarding CRC screening were collected using a self- administered questionnaire.

Results: More than 50% of HCPs were unaware of the frequency of performing screening tests. 64% did not know the correct age after which international guidelines recommend against CRC screening. HCPs were not able to identify the constant feeling of needing to empty bowels (62%), absence of abdominal pain (56%), and blood from rectum without stools (56%) as possible presentations of CRC. Significant difference was noted between nurses’ and physicians’ knowledge.

Conclusion: lack of knowledge among HCPs may be one of the major barriers for CRC screening. Strategies to improve knowledge about CRC and different screening modalities should be implemented to enhance CRC screening and prevention.
