Abstract

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and arise from the interstitial cells of Cajal. Recent progress in molecular biology has contributed to understanding the role of mutations occurring in genes encoding tyrosine kinase receptors, such as KIT, and has revolutionized disease management by using Imatinib as an adjuvant therapy to surgery. We present a rare case of gastric GIST revealed by an abdominal mass complicated by a cutaneous fistula. The patient underwent an atypical gastrectomy with tumor resection, which confirmed the diagnosis, and was treated with Imatinib.
