Abstract

Bordetella species are important respiratory pathogens requiring accurate laboratory identification for appropriate clinical management. This comprehensive review examines current diagnostic methods including culture, molecular techniques, and serology for the detection and differentiation of pathogenic Bordetella species. With the evolution of molecular diagnostics, laboratories can now reliably distinguish between B. pertussis, B. parapertussis, B. bronchiseptica, and emerging species such as B. holmesii. Each species presents unique clinical challenges and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, making accurate identification essential for optimal patient care and public health surveillance.
