Streptomyces is a gram-positive genus of filamentous actinomycetes, a group that encompasses the majority of soil bacterial species. Actinomycetes are a large group of spore-forming bacteria that form branching filaments during growth. Streptomyces includes more than 500 species occurring in soil and several other environmental conditions. Streptomycetes evolved about 450 million years ago, have high G + C DNA content with a complex life cycle having the potential to produce many clinically important bioactive compounds.
