Professor Michael Fullen received the degrees of B.Sc. and M.Sc. from The University of Hull, a Ph.D. from the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA) and a D.Sc. from The University of Wolverhampton. Field-based research projects have been completed or are in progress in Belgium, Brazil, China, The Gambia, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Jamaica, The Isle of Man, Lithuania, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, the UK, the USA and Vietnam. Professor Fullen has published widely in Soil Science. He has authored one book, co-edited three journal special issues, 239 refereed papers, 253 conference papers and 26 consultancy reports. Professor Fullen is also Honorary Professor at Yunnan Agricultural University (China) and an Academician of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. He was External Examiner in Physical Geography (B.Sc. and M.Sc.) at Coventry University (2004-2008) and at Edge Hill University (B.Sc. Geography, 2008-2011). Professor Fullen is a referee for 58 journals and a member of the Editorial Board of 26 Journals. Professor Fullen has jointly supervised 27 Ph.D. theses to completion and 10 Post-Doctoral Researchers and has been Examiner for 31 Ph.D. theses. He has received research grants from over 30 institutions, principally the European Union. He is also Vice-President, Councillor and Representative for the United Kingdom of the World Association for Soil and Water Conservation (WASWAC), Vice-President and UK Representative on the Council of the European Society for Soil Conservation (ESSC), Member of the ESSC Executive Council and Editor-in-Chief of the ESSC Newsletter. Professor Fullen has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, as a Fellow of the Royal Biological Society, as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and as an Academician of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. He is also a Member of the British Geomorphological Research Group, British Society of Soil Science, International Soil Science Society and several European Union research programmes. Professor Fullen was Joint Winner of the ‘Gerold Richter Prize’ from the ESSC in May 2015, winner of the First ‘Antonio Teixiera Guerra’ Award from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, April 2017 and winner of the ‘Friendship with Yunnan Award’ from the People’s Government of Yunnan Province, P.R. China, November 2017.
The research activities of Prof. Michael Fullen are mainly concerned with soil erosion, soil conservation, desertification and desert reclamation and his fieldwork is mainly based in Asia, Brazil and Europe.
