Lisa Maness received her Bachelor of Science Degrees in Biology and Medical Technology and Master’s Degree in Biology from UNC-Greensboro. She earned her doctorate from NC A&T State University with a dissertation titled “Anticancer Activity of Pokeweed Extracts and Their Fractions on Breast and Colon Cancer Cellsâ€. In addition to continuing to work as a medical technologist, she completed a postdoctorate at NC A&T State University. She is a certified Medical Technologist through American Society for Clinical Pathology and American Medical Technologists and is on the Board of Directors and a Subject Matter Expert in Microbiology for the latter organization. As a tenured Associate Professor at Winston-Salem State University, Lisa has taught in the classroom as well as distant learners, with classes including Microbiology, Urinalysis and Body Fluids, Biochemistry, and more. She has lead students in a variety of research topics including the effects of butyric acid on gene expression in preadipocytes and hepatocytes in vitro as well as the inhibition of fungal pathogens by various essential oils. Lisa also has lead presentations at state and national organizations on a variety of topics including human arboviruses, parasites, and cultural competence among laboratorians.
