Association with great teachers in school seeded his quest for science in his mind. Following his passion, he opted to do Honours in chemistry at the University of Calcutta. While studying chemistry, he was fascinated with the chemistry of life. So, he took Biochemistry as his specialization subject in M.Sc. The M.Sc. curriculum introduced him to the chemistry of fundamental processes of life, such as DNA replication, transcription, translation, and DNA repair. From his M.Sc level, he was interested in DNA repair because of its association with so many human diseases. In his MSc, he was involved in research work aiming to find out novel single nucleotide polymorphism in the CREB gene for its possible association with heroin addiction. This work was done under the supervision of Prof. Sumantra Das at the Indian Institute of Chemical biology, Kolkata. After his M.Sc. he acquired 62nd rank in CSIR UGC NET (Life sciences). he then opted to enroll for the Ph.D. program at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, under the supervision of Prof. D. N. Rao. In his Ph.D., the main focus was DNA mismatch repair in Neisseria gonorrhoeae. he biochemically characterizes UvrD helicase, an essential helicase participating in the MMR pathway. he observed NgoUvrD could unwind G quadruplex DNA structures. This novel observation got published in the Biochemical Journal, 2015. he have also focused on the interaction between NgoUvrD and different MMR proteins like MutL, SSB, and RecJ. This study reveals the unique role of DNA in the physical as well as functional interaction between these proteins. he presented this part of his work at the 6th International Conference of European Microbiologists organized by FEMS at Maastricht, The Netherlands and the Indo-French Conference on Recent Advances in Genome Integrity and Plasticity held by IISC and will be communicated soon. he skilled in different molecular biology techniques (PCR, Cloning, Protein expression and purification, Enzyme assay, EMSA, Western blotting, Far- Western analysis, Antibody generation, and purification, Radiolabelling of oligonucleotides) and biophysical techniques (CD spectroscopy, Fluorescence spectroscopy, Surface Plasmon Resonance, Microscale thermophoresis, Mass spectroscopy).
he is a protein biochemist with ample experiences in protein purification, nucleic acid-protein interaction, and elucidating the kinetic mechanism of enzymes.he is heavily interested in studying the proteins involved in DNA replication, DNA repair and replication coupled DNA repair pathways in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. These studies, he believe, will reveal a new avenue for protein therapeutics for curing DNA repair related diseases like cancer. he have copious theoretical and experimental knowledge about helicases involved in DNA repair pathways.
