Dr. Shirin Tarafder is Professor of Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Bangladesh, strong professional with a Master of Philosophy in Medical Microbiology from Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research. She is an experienced teacher of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and teaches Medical Immunology, Molecular biology, Mycology and Bacteriology for more than 30 years. Her other expertise is conduction, management and supervision of research project; supervision and guide of thesis and dissertations of postgraduate courses. Prof. Tarafder’s expertise is on Clinical Immunology and Molecular biology . She launched Flow cytometry immunophenotypic diagnosis of Leukemia, Lymphoma, Primary immunodeficiency disorders (PID), Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) for the first time in Bangladesh. She is working in collaboration for autologous stem cell therapy; also working on application of different types of PCR to see the chromosomal abnormalities in different diseases. Professor Tarafder is working in collaboration with Coordinated Research Project of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease by ApoE genotyping . She has done advanced researches on Tuberculosis : Diagnosis of MTB from sputum sample by LAMP assay ; Detection of MDR-TB, Pre-XDR-TB and XDR-TB by Multiplex Real time PCR ; Detection of different strains of MTB by 24 loci MIRU-VNTR analysis in MDR-TB, Pre-XDR-TB and XDR-TB patients. Her other researches are on Rickettsiae, Legionela, Toxoplasma etc. She has published over 31 articles in peer-reviewed reputed International and national medical journals. She also has international affiliations. She is Member of Asian Council of Science Editors (ACSE), Editorial board member and Reviewer of many reputed international medical journals. Prof. Tarafder attended international conferences as speaker.
