Dr. Potdar has completed his Ph.D. from Tata Memorial Centre Mumbai, India, in 1991 in an area of cancer research. He has more than 30 years of research experience in the field of cancer research & stem cell research. In June 2017, Dr. Potdar has retired after 12 years of service as a Head of Department of Molecular Medicine & Biology at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre, Mumbai. At Jaslok, he has established Molecular Diagnostics and Stem Cell Research laboratory and carried out various Research Programs in the field cancer research, Neurological & genetic disorders, infectious diseases, Diabetic Mellitus etc. At Jaslok, Dr. Potdar has developed several innovated technologies which can help to diagnose and treat various cancers. Dr. Potdar also carried out extensive research work in the field of stem cell research and developed several mesenchymal and hematopoietic cell lines from various normal and tumor tissues, adipose tissue, Human placental membrane, dental pulp cells, blood cells etc. Dr. Potdar’s laboratory became a reference laboratory for several post graduate and doctoral students who wish to learn better technology in these field, all over India. He has published more than 87 papers in Medical Journals and trained more than 1000 students all over India in this field. Dr. Potdar is honored with position of a Secretary for Scientific Advisory and Ethics Committees of Jaslok Hospital for 7 years and is also a Founder Member & Vice President of “Molecular Pathology Association of India (MPAI). Dr. Potdar is a recipient of prestigious National Institute of Health (NIH), USA award and also worked as a faculty scientist at World topmost Cancer Centre “M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre, Houston, Texas, USA” for almost 3 years. Dr. Potdar has been appointed as an Editorial Board member & reviewer for many national and international journals. Due to excellent work in the field of cancer & stem cells, his name was also included in Marquis “Who's Who in World” Book in 2012. He was invited as a member of delegation to visit Italian universities working in the field of Biotechnology, Stem cell Research & Regenerative Medicine by Indo- Italian Chamber of Commerce (IICC), Mumbai, India in year 2015. He is also on a review board of Welcome Trust DBT Alliance fellowship for Clinicians (Government of India) from 2014 – 2017. Dr. Potdar was a Guest Editor for Journal of Cancer Metastasis & Therapy (JCMT) and successfully published special issue on “Circulating Tumor Cells” in cancer diagnosis and therapies. Dr. Potdar also received the “Indy Wood Medical Excellence Award 2016” from World Medical Council, Government of Telangana State, India in year 2016. He was also a finalist for BMJ Award South Asia 2016 for best research paper of the year 2016. This paper has been read by more than 20000 scientists all over the world since publication in year 2015. Year 2017, Dr. Potdar was nominated for Edward Kennedy Memorial Award 2017 by Malaysian cancer organization for excellence research work in cancer diagnosis and therapies. Presently Dr. Potdar is a Faculty & Professor of Genetics and Stem Cell Biology at Dr. A.P J. Abdul Kalam Education & Research Centre, Mumbai. India as well as he holds the position of “Chairman” of their Institutional Ethics Committee (ICE) of this Centre. Recently Journal of Cancer Metastasis & Treatment (JCMT) has awarded “Guest Editor” position for their special issue on “Immunotherapy of Cancer: Future Diagnosis and Therapy of Metastatic Cancer” which will be published in September 2019.
Dr. Potdar has great interest in understanding the mechanism of metastatic cancer and finding out the solution for its cure using innovative technologies. Beside this, he has done extensive work in molecular profiling of various cancer cells, Cancer Stem Cells, induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs), Circulating Tumor cells, Personalized Medicine, cancer drug discovery and Immunotherapy of Cancer.
